Summit Choral Society presents the joyous tradition of the Christmas Candlelight Concerts again this year Dec. 16, 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 44 University Ave. in Akron.
Under the artistic leadership of Marie Bucoy-Calavan, music will be performed by the Masterworks Chorale, Summit Choral Society's flagship ensemble, along with SCS's Children's Choirs. As is also a Summit Choral Society tradition, those who are alumni of the Children's Choir Program will return to join in the singing. The concert features the choirs jointly and individually in a variety of choral repertoire. The concert opens with "Ave Maria" by Franz Biebl performed by the Masterworks Chorale and the Children's Performance Choir.
A highlight of the musical selections is Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Fantasia on Christmas Carols" with string orchestra, timpani, organ and featuring baritone soloist, Tyler Alessi.
A special holiday treat is a newly commissioned work arranged by Mickey McGroarty for Anna Ahrens, SCS Western Reserve Hospitals Choral Conducting Fellow and Summit Choral Society for the tune "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day." This new arrangement features varying textures for chorus and soloists and explores the theme of hope at Christmastime.
The concert finale is a moving rendition of "O Come, All Ye Faithful" that is sure to fill you with the holiday spirit. Throughout the concert, Bucoy-Calavan will invite the audience to join the choirs in singing favorite Christmas carols.
All tickets are for reserved seating and there are no special discounts. Tickets will be available at the door, but it is advised to order tickets in advance. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit www.summitchoralsociety.org or call Summit Choral Society at 330-434-7464.
