Letter: Says people need to hold current administration accountable

The courageous Republican senator from Arizona, John McCain, stated (in a speech at the Munich Security Conference posted on his website) that for the first time in recent years, the survival of the "West" as we know it is in question.

His motivation for this alarm was made clear by considering how the WWII generation would view the current situation.

McCain said, "They would be alarmed by the growing inability, and even unwillingness, to separate truth from lies," and "They would be alarmed by the hardening resentment we see toward immigrants, and refugees, and minority groups, especially Muslims."

Timothy Snyder's Time article, "Donald Trump and the New Dawn of Tyranny," pointed out that the combination of a public that does not believe they are being told the truth by the press, and at the same time have a perceived fear from others, is an age old combination used by autocrats to undermine democracy and the rule of law.

A call to action has been provided by former President George W. Bush who said recently on the Today Show.

"We need an independent media to hold people like me to account," Bush said. "Power can be very addictive, and it can be corrosive. And it's important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power, whether it be here or elsewhere."

Dan Rather, on his Facebook page gave an important charge to all of us.

"This is an emergency that can no longer be placed solely at the feet of President Trump, or even the Trump Administration. This is a moment of judgment for everyone who willingly remains silent."

An administration that openly calls the Press the "opposition" and their news "fake," and spins unjustified fear of Muslims, needs to be called, by us, to be accountable for its words.
