Knight girls bounced in first round of playoffs

The Nordonia High School girls basketball team's 2016-17 season came to a close recently, as the Lady Knights dropped their last game of the regular season and their first postseason contest.

Nordonia's final game of the regular campaign was against Suburban League National Division rival Wadsworth on the road Feb. 15. The Lady Grizzlies topped the Lady Knights by the score of 56-24.

The game was close in the early going, as Wadsworth built a 15-13 lead by the end of the opening quarter. Then the Grizzlies outscored Nordonia 15-4 during the second period to take a comfortable 30-17 advantage into the locker room at intermission.

Wadsworth continued to effectively apply defensive pressure in the second half. The Lady Grizzlies outscored the Lady Knights 15-3 in the third stanza and 11-4 during the fourth frame to account for the game's finally tally.

Freshman forward Lizzie Imrie and junior guard Sandra Spellman led Nordonia offensively with six points apiece.

In addition, senior forward Jordan Zambach scored four points, sophomore guards Soleil Barnes and Sion Williams both contributed three points, and senior forward Alex Boroski accounted for two markers. Imrie led her team in the rebounding department with four boards.

Wadsworth shot the ball much better than the Lady Knights, making twice as many field goals (18 to nine). The Lady Grizzlies also knocked down 16-of-19 free throw attempts (84 percent). Nordonia was just 2-of-9 from the charity stripe (22 percent).

Spellman sank a pair of three-pointers to account for her point total, while Barnes and Williams also converted a three-point attempt.

The Division I district tournament draw took place Feb. 5 at Euclid High School. As a result of that draw, Nordonia received the seventh seed in the tournament.

Nordonia opened the playoffs Feb. 18, against Aurora at Aurora High School. The Lady Greenmen bounced the Lady Knights by the score of 47-43, ending Nordonia's season.

Nordonia clashed with Aurora in the second game of the regular season. The Lady Knights won that contest by the score of 46-41, but they weren't able to beat the Lady Greenmen for a second time.

With the loss, Nordonia finished the season with an overall record of 11-12.

Nordonia ended the regular campaign with a mark of 11-11. The Knights were also 7-7 in the National Division of the Suburban League.

Stow-Munroe Falls won the division championship with a ledger of 14-1. The Lady Bulldogs also sported an overall mark of 21-3.
